THE SNAKE CHARMER
THE SNAKE CHARMER
'The Snake Charmer' is an all-over hand embroidered and beaded bodysuit. It was designed, constructed and embroidered by Abdul.
Three pythons interlock themselves around the dancer's body. Each snake tells a story. A vicious snake gasps as its tongue grazes the dancers neck while simultaneously being strangled by a cocky, flirtatious python. This snake confidently scans the dancer's body. Both snakes eventually meet with a stealthy snake that twists its way up the dancer's back.
The media for this piece is a mixture of wool, cotton yarn, glass, plastic and wooden beads. The imagery is created using a layered mixture of techniques including appliqué, embroidery and hand beading.
The Inspiration for this intricately hand-worked bodysuit comes from a combination of sources; namely Japanese all over body tattoos, costume design and drawings for The Ballets Russes by early 20th Century Costume Designer Léon Bakst and the natural world; which is a continuing source of inspiration for Abdul.
