LONDON BALLROOM SCENE
2018/2019
The London Ballroom Scene is a QPOC and LGBTQ+ safe space where people can gather meet and express themselves freely. Abdul was introduced to the world of Ballroom by close friend Jessica Au aka Alala 007. Having already been aware of the world of drag balls via documentaries like ‘Paris Is Burning’ released in 1990, Abdul’s mind was blown by the first Ball he attended as a spectator in 2017, ‘The Slay Bell’ Ball.
Abdul was particularly inspired by the raw creativity in the innovative costumes that participants walked down the runway in. And in April 2018, Abdul created his first costume; a sublime crimson red chiffon gown with feather trim in the style of a 1950s pin-up for Alala 007 to walk the ‘Sex Siren’ category at Jay Jay Revlon’s ‘Touch Of Red’ Ball.
Since the ‘Touch Of Red’ Ball Abdul has sought out impressive, individual Ballroom participants and collaborated with them to create unique looks and costumes they can compete in for their various categories, that portrays their distinctive selves.
